Core Modules

Here are the workshop contents for the CORE Modules.

Module 1: Me as a Manager

Module 1 takes managers through what management vs leadership is, what strengths they have (and when these can be useful or cause issues), the challenges they face and then setting a vision of the manager they want to be.

This is a perfect module for newer managers to establish who they want to be, or for existing managers who are facing a changing demographic in their team and need to reset how they manage!

Module 2: Essential Employment Law

Module 2 is for New Zealand only. This covers the key pieces of employment law that managers should know to make sure that they are complying, and to answer questions from employees. However the module also includes discussions about applying the legislation and dealing with challenges.

What participants say:

“The whole workshop was interesting and informative and the handouts are really good for referencing back. Was surprised how much I enjoyed this as I thought it would be boring.”

Module 3: Perfect Performance Reviews

Perfect to run before managers go through performance reviews with their teams. The first section has time for you to refresh managers on your own company process, before they move onto learning how to tailor their reviews (because high performers should have a different conversation to your solid dependables), then how to review goals and skills and the fish hooks that can catch managers out, to finish with a case study to discuss some of the challenges that can happen and how to overcome them!

Feedback from participants:

“I liked the one on one conversations handout. This was an excellent well paced workshop. My learning increased significantly.”

Module 4: Poor Performance

One of the most popular modules to be purchased because this is a difficult area to get right. You can choose to title this so it fits your organisational culture.

The workshop covers making sure managers can identify if something is poor performance, or something else, then great methods to give feedback through to putting a formal performance plan in place to set expectations going forward. There’s also a case study to analyse and see what works and what doesn’t.

Feedback from participants:

“The whole course was so informative. Identifying different types of conversations. Learning feedback methods. Practical. Small theory. Actual skills to take back to the workplace.”

Module 5: Recruitment and Selection

With this module you can choose which 3 sections are included in a half day – depending on which areas are most important for your managers. For example the left hand version was for a company who wanted to focus on challenges, interviewing and then evaluating candidates, as managers were interviewing and not making the best hiring choice.

The workshop on the right was for a company with a lot of managers not following the process and asking rogue interview questions and not conducting probity checks!

The workshop can also be run as a full day, with all 6 of the sections below included. You can also purchase the off the shelf for all 6 sections with a small extra cost.

What participants said:

“I enjoyed the privacy principles, Human Rights Act, what is lawful and/vs unlawful. Total workshop very informative. The examples given and how they linked to what we did really helped.”

Module 6: Clever Communications

Maybe this module should be the first, because communication is the reason for most things that go right with managing a team, and also goes wrong!!

This workshop covers understanding your style and others, then how to adapt your communications to this. We then work through giving feedback and how to be assertive and influence your team.

Feedback from participants:

“So many useful tips! Really enjoyed the whole workshop. Interacting with others and listening to other people’s thinking. Having time and space to think and how I might apply these skills.”
