
Here’s an interesting fact from the interweb. Apparently when most men shower, they stand facing the shower head, the water going on their chest. However most women stand facing away from the shower head, with the water on their back.
Neither realise that they shower the opposite way to each other!!
Don’t believe us? Ask your family and friends and see.
An interesting point with HR and people management is that we often do things the way we think that everyone does them – not realizing that there is another way entirely. Think about the following:
- Managing time: Often we use the same prioritizing method we’ve always used for years, even if it’s not as effective as we’d like. So instead, do some research (or come on Elephant’s training!) and see what new techniques there are or new technologies to help. Have you tried the pomodoro technique? Do you use email templates? Do you try time chunking? What about Agile?
- HR policies: Do you still have formal, legalistic, long winded and hard to read HR policies? Or again are you seeing the different ways out there of making your policies more interesting? Some companies have policies in an app or a game, or comic book policy manuals, or at least use colours and graphics and funky language.
- Communications: So many comms plans still consist of sending an email out to everyone about your new initiative or process. But that’s not the only way to do it!! Internal social media channels, videos, infographics, gifs, using the hero concept, using WIIFM, mixing up your channels – there’s a whole new world out there of how to connect with your managers and employees.
So here’s the challenge from us:
If you work in HR, or OD, or learning, or manage a team – could you reinvent how you do the above? Could you turn around and experiment with another way?
If you do, you might suddenly find that you’re managing time more effectively, people fall in love with your HR policies (what? It could happen!!), and your communications get way more engaging and interesting.
And if you’re stuck for new ideas? Try taking a shower!
